IDC, a world-renowned market research firm, has released its latest smartphone market share report. According to data, Apple surpassed Samsung as the new global smartphone market leader in the fourth quarter of last year. In terms of annual shipments, Samsung still tops the list with a market share of 21.6%. Apple, Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi ranked second to fifth. For now, though, the latter has a strong momentum.
The report said, in the fourth quarter, global smartphone shipments totaled 403.5 million units, which reduces 6.3 percent of the same time of last year. But Apple topped the market with 19.2 percent, while Samsung 18.4 percent. In addition, Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO ranked third to fifth. Xiaomi shipped 28.1 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, which increases 96.9 percent in the same period of last year, and it has become the only handset maker to reverse the decline in the handset market.
